
In general, RAID support depends on the NVR’s hardware and firmware, not just the brand. The safe rule is:
NVRs that are usually good for RAID
These are the types I’d trust for RAID-based CCTV storage:
1) Professional / enterprise multi-bay NVRs
These are the best candidates for RAID because they usually have:
- 4, 8, 12, 16+ HDD bays
- built-in RAID controller / RAID menu
- support for RAID 0 / 1 / 5 / 6 / 10 (depends on model)
Best for:
- 16+ cameras
- 24/7 recording
- office / factory / warehouse / school / bank systems
Typical examples
Many higher-end models from:
- Hikvision
- Dahua Technology
- Uniview
- enterprise server-based NVRs
2) Rackmount NVRs
These are often 1U / 2U / 3U / 4U NVRs with multiple hard drive bays.
Why they’re reliable for RAID
- built for large storage
- better cooling
- often support RAID 5 / RAID 6 / RAID 10
- designed for long continuous recording
Good for:
- central monitoring rooms
- big camera projects
- commercial buildings
3) PC/server-based NVRs with RAID controller
If you build CCTV recording on a server or workstation, RAID can be very reliable when using:
- a proper hardware RAID card, or
- motherboard/server RAID supported by the VMS/NVR software
Good for:
- custom CCTV systems
- very large storage
- advanced recording servers
NVRs that usually do NOT support RAID
1) Entry-level NVRs (1–4 channel / many 8-channel low-end models)
These often have:
- only 1 HDD bay
- no RAID menu
- no parity / mirroring support
Result:
- No RAID
- only single HDD storage
2) Wi-Fi / consumer NVRs
Many wireless NVR kits are designed for home use:
- small storage
- simple plug-and-play
- usually single HDD only
Result:
- not suitable for RAID
- not ideal for critical surveillance retention
3) NVRs with only 1 or 2 SATA ports and no RAID feature
Even if an NVR has 2 HDD slots, that does not automatically mean RAID.
It must explicitly say in the specs that it supports:
- RAID 0
- RAID 1
- RAID 5
- RAID 6
- RAID 10
If the menu only shows HDD format / initialize / overwrite and nothing about RAID, then it’s likely non-RAID.
Practical buying rule
Reliable for RAID
Choose an NVR if it has all or most of these:
- 4 or more HDD bays
- official datasheet says RAID 0/1/5/6/10
- enterprise / professional series
- good cooling and power design
- support for surveillance-grade drives
- intended for 16+ cameras or large projects
Not suitable for RAID
Avoid expecting RAID from NVRs that have:
- only 1 HDD bay
- basic home/small office model
- Wi-Fi kit NVR
- no RAID option in the datasheet or menu
- only “storage expansion” but no RAID mention
My recommendation by system size
Small CCTV system (4–8 cameras)
- RAID usually not necessary
- use 1 good surveillance HDD or RAID 1 only if the NVR supports it
Medium CCTV system (8–32 cameras)
- choose an NVR with RAID 5
- minimum 4-bay NVR is better
Large / critical CCTV system (32+ cameras)
- use a professional rackmount RAID NVR

- RAID 5 = balance of storage + protection
- RAID 6 = safer for critical sites
- RAID 10 = strong performance + redundancy
Important note
Some brands have both RAID and non-RAID models in the same family. So the correct answer is always based on the exact model number.
For example:
- one Hikvision NVR may support RAID
- another Hikvision NVR may not
Best way to verify an NVR supports RAID
Check these 3 places:
1) Datasheet / spec sheet
Look for words like:
- RAID 0/1/5/6/10
- HDD group
- storage array
- redundant storage
2) HDD count
- 1 HDD bay → almost always no RAID
- 4+ HDD bays → RAID is possible, but still verify the spec
3) NVR menu
Look in:
- Storage
- HDD Management
- RAID
- Storage Mode
If RAID is supported, there is normally a dedicated RAID configuration menu.
